WAHNSINN*

The part that got all this started - accelerator pedal mount
'75, BMW 2002
Sienabraun Metallic - Original
Color
*Dementia, insanity, lunacy,
madness.
Take your pick. All relate to taking on this car as a project, and been self-fulfilling.
No regrets whatsoever.
April 2004
Full electrical meltdown due to a stuck voltage regulator. Was
driving from Syracuse to Easthampton, got gas in Albany, and the car wouldn't
start. Popped the hood and smelled a cooked battery and called AAA. Toothless
guy showed up and offered to tow me into the woods, but got a jump instead and
met my wife – who had already left – to swap cars. She got within a few miles
of home when there was a popp and puff of smoke, the wipers went crazy and the
engine died. Got towed back home and cried (My wife, daughter and Wahnsinn).
I felt sick too when I heard the story. Had it towed to my mechanic who found
that pretty much every circuit in the instrument panel had exploded/melted,
the wiper motor was gone as was the alternator... About $3K in parts and labor
latter had the car back on the road. We took time over the summer to "reestablish
our relationship" though I didn't stray too far from home. Funny actually.
When I bought the car I fearlessly drove to Mystic and back in a day and did
other like things, and that was before I knew what shape the engine was in...
Oh well. Looking forward to driving again once the snow melts and the Mr. Salt
is all washed away.

Home at last
June 12, 2003

In the drivers seat at long last, and ready to head out...
but then, checked the lights..., and some electrical gremlins show up. Tried
to troubleshoot them there, but not something you want to rush. Car looks absolutely
amazing, the engine purrs, practically a new car. What's a few more days.

Home Stretch. Thanks for the pics, Steve.
April 24, 2003

Everything is going together beautifully.
April 15, 2003
WOW!!! Heading towards final assembly tomorrow.
April 11, 2003
Back at Greg's getting polished and buffed.
March 28, 2003

Engine in today. What an improvment of the original
state which looked liked this inside. Off
to be polished next week, so I'm told...
March 18, 2003

Moving right along. New dash skin now on, new gas tank in,
engine ready to go in tomorrow... I can feel the open road already.
March 7, 2003

Paint done, and back at Steve's. Engine compartment gets filled
asap, then back to Greg's for polishing, then back to Steve's to be reassembled.
February 21, 2003

Paint F I N A L L Y going on. So far the trunk, engine compartment, and undersides
/ insides of the hoods doors. and sun roofs painted. All I can say is W O W!
Looks really sharp. After painting it goes to have the engine compartment filled
and everything hooked up, then back to the body shop for polishing, then back
to the other place for final assembly and detailling.

Well, into 2003, and the dream of driving this 2002 in '02 are long gone. Just
as well, I guess, as it's heading to be a record winter in terms of snow, ice,
and S A L T. Body work completed, final primers on, and car heading to the paint
show for a few coats of sienna brown metallic and a few coats of clear coat.
After that, it goes to the shop that stripped it, gets the engine put in, paint
polished and buffed, and then put all back together again... The end is in sight.
October 25, 2002

Paint primer on, and still sanding down... Paint will hopefully go on soon.
I'd love to still be able to drive this 2002 in 2002, even if back and forth
on the driveway...
September 4, 2002

Body work still in process. The yellow is the anti-rust primer, the white
the putty used to smooth out any uneven areas.
August 16, 2002

All metal work (patches) completed. First coat of anti-rust primer on, and
body work (smoothing of dings) in full swing. This is followed by sanding till
smooth, the paint primer, and finally the real paint which gets polished to
perfection...
