[drawing of a venetian blind book structure]
'venetian blind' structure, drawing by Emily-Jane Dawson

This style of book is traditionally made of palm leaves or bamboo strips, which media are especially suited for writing on with pen and ink. This example is laced together with only one cord, but historic examples may have as many as three cords connecting the leaves. Modern book artists have made venetian structures out of cardboard, plastic, metal, wood, leather, paper, and other materials.
