Though most readers of English may assume that writing must be done from left to right and from top to bottom, as it typically is in our language, many other directions and methods of writing have been used throughout history. In modern times, even, there are many variations: Japanese can be written vertically (from right to left) or horizontally (from left to right as English is written). Arabic and other Semetic scripts are usually written horizontally and from right to left. Other methods not so well-known among readers of European languages are detailed below.
