I'm presently a graphic designer by day in Evanston, Illinois, and a book artist/writer by night. I am planning on attending a Letterpress for Book Artists class at Penland, NC this summer. I have handmade just two rather thin books so far, but I am working towards combining my short stories with letterpress book design. I'm looking to the future of possibly starting my own business as a graphic design and letterpress shop. Right now, I am looking for advice, opinions, etc. I want to find out what it's like having a small private press, what pitfalls I might avoid, whether this is a bad idea, and so forth. I would prefer to talk to someone in the Chicagoland area in hopes of maybe visiting his/her press shop, but any pointers from anywhere in the world would be most helpful. Thanks!

Peter Beard's journals/diaries are fine examples of scrapbooks taking on a higher art form. Can anyone lead me to a site featuring his s?. I believe there was an exhibition exhibition of his journals in Paris last fall, but have been unable to find the catalog on t. Beard is a photographer living in Africa. I am not as interested in his photowork, which is well known and widely published, as I am his diaries because of their value to the field of bookarts. Thank you

I am an art instructor in Kansas City, Kansas. Over the past three years I have gotten very interested in making different forms of books with my students. I am now doing some collaboration with other teachers in my building. My supervisor has asked another teacher who is also interested in making books and myself to run a series of workshops on making books. We would like to know if you know or are aware of any book artists in our area(Kansas or Missouri) who might be interested in being a presenter at one of our workshops. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I have a passion that seems to be growing out of control for Woodcut Novels or wordless stories told in woodcuts, engravings, drawings or linoleum cuts. Often these books were done in small editions at fine presses. Over the years I have purchased novels in woodcuts by traditional and contemporary artists such as Lynd Ward, Giacomo Patri, Laurence Hyde, Frans Masereel, James Reid, Clement Moreau, Willy Fries, Charles Turzak, Chris Stern, Rebecca Blissell, Maureen Cummins, Babbette Katz, and Jules Remedios Faye, however I seem to be at a dead end! I spend more time in libraries and on the internet than with my family trying to locate information and I just can’t seem to get past the easy to find sources. Would anyone familiar with this type of work be willing to share any information or the names of unfamiliar artists who are working or have worked in the Woodcut Novel genre? Thank you! K.
